I fully agree!  In my (admittedly fairly short) experience with Linrad, 
I have found that differences in CPU load among the various FFT versions 
are usually not very significant.  For a single-channel, modest 
bandwidth system, just about any >100 MHz computer will do.

If the experience of many others is any indication, getting everything 
to run properly together -- Linux, svgalib, sound I/O, etc. -- is more 
likely to be your problem than CPU speed.
