Leif:

Just to say that you can Alt+F1234 to get a console at the install to 
make the modprobe.

Also, I think that if you choose the "expert26" mode at the Debian 
installer, you can insert the modules you desire, and even to send 
module parameters.
If it is an ISA card it is difficult that the system can autodetect. I 
think that the network card module should be on the CD, you only need to 
modprobe it.
