Hi Ramiro,
I have been playing with the debian installer on the "qemu" emulator.
I have tried the "expert26" mode. When the installer fails to detect the
network card (I have forced it just to test), it shows a beautifull
screen in which you can choose "graphically" the desired netword card
module, and even parameters.
"expert26" hangs (with a blue screen) at an early stage.
You sure run out of memory.
The error message (AltF3) says missing modules ide-mod.....
This is strange. Does the installer detects, configure and mount
properly your cdrom drive?.
Yes. No problem. But it can not install the base system.
it hangs at "Cannot create directory ./usr/lib/perl5/auto"
Creating a directory /usr/lib/perl5/ does not help.
I have no idea what ./ refers to.
Did you pass the formating stage?
Try this: If you choose a text console with ALT+F2 you will notice that
network card kernel drivers (and also 3c509.ko among them) are on
/lib/modules/2.x.x/kernel/drivers/net
The modules are not there because the base system is not installed yet.
No, the modules are present inmediately after the "loading installer
modules from CD" stage, if succeeded. But if you could not install the
nic-extra-*** stuff, you will not have the 3c509.ko driver. They have
packed in that nic-extra *.udeb because it is not recent hardware and
rarely used. The problem is your memory, the installer detects that you
have little memory and it do not load all installer-packages.
The base system is installed on a later stage.
but at the earlier stages of the installer they are not present. Once
the cdrom is properly detected and the CD-R is mounted, it gets from the
CD-R the debian packages (.udeb) that carry the full set of drivers, and
more programs needed by the installer.
It is impossible to go any further, trying to take install GRUB, LILO
or proceed without boot loader goes through the install base system and
exits with the same error.
It seems to me that nobody ever tried this install procedure on an old
computer.................
